Mental health advice from war survivors

I have my fair share of mental health problems and I am determined to fix them. Sometimes I wonder though, how people manage these muddy waters, who went through exponentially tougher shit than I did. I know, our suffering is unique and can’t be compared, but there must be something in people, who go through incredible pain and come out stronger on the other side. When my descent into the depth of my psyche started, my grandma was the first person to be of real help.

I had seen almost a dozen therapists and what I had seen during these sessions was more than just disappointing. It was straight out dangerous what these people were doing. There are wonderful therapists out there, I just haven’t seen one. On the other hand, there are a lot of people in therapy for decades without a sign of betterment. This one therapist I saw, was in her 60s, had a weird robe on, and very short hair. That was not what was shocking me, it was her staring look that she was giving me when she was sitting on her throne (no kidding) that was located on the other side of the room. There were literally like 10 feet of empty space between us. The first thing she asked me was if I was aware of how dangerous it was to take drugs like magic mushrooms. Seriously?

My grandma has seen shit. She grew up in Hamburg, Germany during WWII. She happened to be there when the allies bombed…
